National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo offers condolences on the passing of Chief Randy Kapashesit

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Ottawa (ON) – Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo offered the following statement of condolence regarding today’s passing of MoCreebec Council of the Cree Nation Chief Randy Kapashesit.

“It is with utmost respect that I offer heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, council and entire community of MoCreebec on behalf of the Assembly of First Nations and the national executive.

Chief Kapashesit’s leadership was vital in the efforts of First Nations in Canada and Indigenous peoples globally to achieve recognition and a better quality of life for all Indigenous peoples.  Most recently, his skills and experience were recognized internationally by way of his appointment as the representative for the United Nations North American Indigenous Caucus on the planning committee for the United Nations 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.

I am honoured to convey the words of his close friend and colleague Association of Iroquois and Allied Deputy Grand Chief Gordon Peters: ‘Chief Kapashesit led a tireless struggle for his people to get recognition, while at the same time staying focused on achieving success in achieving a better quality of life for the people of Mocreebec.  As an individual Randy loved and appreciated music and was a dedicated and loving father for his 2 children and partner.’

While his passing is a shock and tremendous loss for the people of Mocreebec and the leadership circles he shared, Chief Kapashesit’s strong vision and dedicated efforts will carry on through the younger generations he helped lead.  We offer our thoughts and our prayers to his loved ones and all members of Mocreebec Council and Nation.”

The Assembly of First Nation is the national organization representing First Nation citizens in Canada.
