APTN Announces 6th Annual Aboriginal Day Live and Celebration

Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) will host Aboriginal Day Live and Celebration, an annual celebration of National Aboriginal Day and the summer solstice, on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Two concerts will take place: one at the Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba and the other at the First Nations University of Canada in Regina, Saskatchewan. Both will be broadcast live across the country on APTN and APTN HD.

In its sixth year, these free concerts will feature some of the biggest names in Aboriginal music and television. Performers will be announced at a special press conference in May. Co-hosts for the Winnipeg event include Don Kelly, star of the APTN hit series Fish out of Water; Candy Palmater, comedian and star of The Candy Show; and APTN’s own Upload personality Chantelle. Co-hosts for the Regina event include Aboriginal DJ and actress Crystle Lightning and First Nations producer and actress Jennifer Podemski.

For the second year in a row, to precede the live concert, APTN will host its celebration, a day-long schedule of events that will include a variety of family-friendly events suitable for both young and old, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal People.

The Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival

The Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival, taking place June 19-24, 2012, in Ottawa, Ontario, is currently seeking film and video submissions, media art submissions, as well as participants for a Sound Production Residency.

Any film, video, or media work created by Canadian or international Indigenous artists, or that tells First Nations, Métis, or Inuit stories, is eligible. Film and video submissions can be in any genre (documentary, drama, animation, experimental etc.,) or any length. Media art submissions can be in various forms, such as installation pieces, websites, or interactive/digital/conceptual/performance art. Already complete or proposed media works are eligible. The Sound Production Residency will take place during the week of the festival, and is designed for beginners and emerging artists who will learn one of the music industries top production/ recording software’s. The residency is open to all First Nations, Métis, and Inuit youth between the ages of 18-30, and participants will receive a pass to all Asinabka film screenings and events.
