Northwestel Offers $4000 to six Northern Students

Post-secondary students of the North invited to apply to Northern Futures Program

Whitehorse- Two weeks remain until Northwestel’s deadline to apply for the Northern Futures Program for the 2012-2013 academic year. Post-secondary students across the North are invited to apply for six $4000.00 scholarships.

“We established the program in 2002 because we wanted to find a way to support the dreams and aspirations of northern students,” said Paul Flaherty, Northwestel President and Chief Executive Officer. “We also hope to encourage them to return to the North to work, after their education is complete, as a way of giving back to their home communities and building a better, stronger North.”

Edward Hunt, a past recipient, and current summer student with Northwestel said “The Northern Futures Scholarship was one of the best scholarships I could have received during my engineering studies at the University of Alberta. Not only was it a significant financial aid, it also came with employment with Northwestel, giving me peace of mind as the academic year came to a close.”

Eligible students must be engaged in full-time post-secondary studies in Business/Commerce, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Telecommunications. Northwestel strives to award fifty percent of the scholarships to aboriginal students.

The deadline to apply for the 2012-2013 scholarships is July 30th. More details on the application guidelines are available at www.nwtel.ca, including the application forms. Inquiries can also be directed to scholarships@nwtel.ca..
