Context
The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is founded on the collective goal to enhance, promote, and foster the social, economic, cultural and political well-being of First Nations and Métis women within First Nation, Métis and Canadian societies. As a national organization representing Aboriginal women since 1974, NWAC’s mandate is to achieve equality for all Aboriginal women in Canada.
NWAC has previously completed 10 Life Stories through the Sisters In Spirit (SIS) project, which was a research, education and policy initiative from 2005-2010. Through the SIS initiative, NWAC worked with families to create these 10 Life Stories. These stories were printed in the report Voices of Our Sisters in Spirit: A report to Families and Communities and (released in November 2008) and updated with additional life stories and released in March 2009. They are available for download at http://www.nwac.ca/programs/sis-research.
NWAC’s Evidence to Action (ETA) project continues to address violence against Aboriginal women and girls that results in their death and disappearance, and the needs of their families and will end April 2014. The objectives of this project are:
The Life Stories digital storytelling project will build on NWAC’s legacy of working directly with families who have a missing or murdered loved one and “give voice” to the selected families willing or wishing to share their story.
Because of the increase use of and demand for social media and technology, NWAC will create six new life stories using the method of digtal STORYTELLING as a way honouring the women and girls who have been lost to violence and to remember those still missing.
