July 12, 2012 – Toronto, The Assembly of First Nations Annual General Assembly Host Committee would like to announce the Gala theatrical performance of “Sovereign Alliances” which will be performed for one night at the Elgin Theatre as the final cultural and social event of their program. This will be taking place at the Elgin Theatre, 189 Yonge Street, Thursday, July 19, from 8:00pm – 10:00 pm (there will be an intermission). Tickets for Sovereign Alliances are available at the AFN AGA Host Committee table at the Metro Toronto Convention Center July 17 and 18, are $50 and are limited.
Sovereign Alliances is a snap shot view of the moments that are important to First Nation Peoples and their role in the War of 1812. From the first agreement to today, First Nations Peoples and their relation to Canada is clear. The land and the future of Indigenous Peoples are the clear reason for them to enter the war. Our truth is played out in highlighted moments from the past and today.
”Sovereign Alliances offers a glimpse into the true history of the War of 1812. Our warriors made extraordinary sacrifices and without their involvement Canada would not exist. This is a history that must be acknowledged and respected.” states Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy.
Writer/Director Herbie Barnes adds, “Our children should be raised on the stories of Niibaakom and Wabaha as much as they are raised on Billy Bishop and Jacques Cartier. They need to know that their rights as First Nation Peoples were built on the strength and efforts of these great Ancestors. I am very honoured to be part of Sovereign Alliances.”
